The Big Three – Your Team’s Top Defensive Trio in 2026

Some teams are blessed when it comes to their defensive unit. Others… not so much.

Where do they sit when it comes to the most erotic of AFL combinations… the threesome?

Well, not that erotic, granted… unless we find some interesting footage from the camera that sits in the change rooms to capture when injured players head in to be assessed, but still pretty important.

Weekly, HB has his regular Defensive Player of the Year Award column, which we’ll have up in the next 24 hours, but this week we’re doing a little more.

Let’s have a look at the best defensive threesomes from every team following Round Nine.

And yes, I know I could have avoided the smut by calling it defensive trios… but I am not that kind of person, okay? I’m much, much worse.

For the record, these lists are calculated using our Defensive Player of the Year Award formula, which is published twice every three weeks for our Inner Circle Members. In that column, you get the breakdown of the 20 best-performed defenders of the season, as well as the top ten from the most recent round.

Membership also helps this site grow and develop new mechanisms to put the official ones to shame. On we go…

This is just the introduction – the remainder of this article is for our members. They support me, and I provide for them. It’s a good deal.

Oh… a Mongrel paywall… the worst of all paywalls. We’re all in on the 2026 AFL season. Player articles, stats, awards, game coverage. Dump the mainstream lip service and dive into articles like this – you will never look back. If you don’t want to, that’s fine. I consider it your loss as we get into the grind of the season, and you’re stuck with the stuff that’s frustrated you for years.
