The Dogs threatened, and threw everything they had at the reigning premiers, but as has happened so often in 2025, it just wasn’t enough. Brisbane were too good.
As close as the Dogs got, it genuinely only felt as though the Lions may not win this game for a very short period. When Rhylee West marked and goaled to pull the Dogs within a kick of the Lions, it was suddenly ‘game on’, and just as they did every time the visitors looked like mounting a challenge, the Brisbane Lions answered.
It was a strange game, with the home team looking better for long periods, but they failed to hit targets inside 50, and when they did manage to locate one, that target failed to finish the work in front of goal.
We’re at the point of the season where we start seeing some marquee rematches, and going back to Round Five, one of the clashes that opened a lot of eyes involved Sam Darcy and Harris Andrews. The way Darcy was able to establish dominance, and if dominance is not the right word, then perhaps “the upper hand” fits better, over Andrews, was amazing to see. So, you can excuse me for being a little excited when, before the game, Chris Fagan confirmed that we’d be seeing those two line up on each other again in Round 19.
It played out to a bit of a fizzer, though, with Darcy playing further up the ground, and Aaron Naughton assuming the role as the number one target.
I have some thoughts on that one.
Enough preamble.
Let’s jump into The Mongrel’s Big Questions from the Brisbane win over the Dogs.

Oh… a Mongrel paywall… the worst of all paywalls. Why? Because HB believes work such as this is worth a mere pittance per day. Whilst you could stick with Caro’s Arrow or Kane’s Vol-Kane-O, you’ll get your 500 words in the newspaper and be happy, or you could dive articles like this, clocking in at over 3.3k. If you don’t want to, that’s fine. You’re welcome to join and keep reading if you do.
