What do you take away from a pre-season clash?
I guess it depends on who you follow, right? If you’re a North Melbourne supporter, you look at this game and feel content that you saw some great development from the kids you’ve got coming through, and happy with the way they gelled well with the senior players to provide a win over the reigning premiers.
If you sit on the black and white side of the fence, you sit back and take into strong consideration the names that did not suit up for this game, and then the players who gave their legs a stretch for the first half before taking a seat to view the second half from the bench.
Me; I have no dog in this fight, so I reckon I’m the man you trust, and for me, this was a great chance to explore a few aspects of the game.
So many times during the season, we see a rash of injuries curb the momentum of a team. A side with great depth can overcome these periods and still win. That is the culture coaches attempt to cultivate. That was what the Pies were faced with in this one – a team with plenty of stars missing.
And so, we look at North, with Luke McDonald, Aidan Corr, Griffin Logue, Zane Duursma, Hugh Greenwood, Bailey Scott, Charlie Comben, Eddie Ford, and Tarryn Thomas missing and we see what they can do.
Likewise, we look at the Pies, with Scott Pendlebury, Brody Mihocek, Brayden Maynard, Darcy Moore, Tom Mitchell, Steele Sidebottom, Nathan Murphy, and Jeremy Howe missing and see how the next group accounts for their absence.
