When your team is down and almost out, things become easy.
Expectations are low, and you’re almost resigned to the fact you’re finishing at the tail end of the ladder. You start thinking about next yar, the draft, and things other than footy. And then, something happens.
The team shows something, and like Michael Corleone, just when you thought you were out, they pull you back in! You start to hope.
The title says it all – it’s the hope that kills ya!
On the weekend, the Bombers gave their supporters something to cheer for. Miraculous goals from their former captain, veterans finding the footy and using it well, and maligned players emerging from the VFL to provide exactly what the club has been screaming out for.
That was all great, but more important than all that was where the hardest work was coming from. Yes, the Bombers may have come together and finally played out four quarters, but it was the work of the younger brigade that became the talking point.
And when your kids start performing, you cannot help but feel hope. You may even start to believe that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Fingers crossed it’s not a train.
This is just the introduction – the remainder of this article is for our members. They support me, and I provide for them. It’s a good deal.
Oh… a Mongrel paywall… the worst of all paywalls. We’re all in on the 2026 AFL season. Player articles, stats, awards, game coverage. Dump the mainstream lip service and dive into articles like this – you will never look back. If you don’t want to, that’s fine. I consider it your loss as we get into the grind of the season, and you’re stuck with the stuff that’s frustrated you for years.
