The Doc’s AFLW 50 – Post-2022 Season

It’s been a hot minute since the conclusion of the AFLW season, but I’m back with the post-season top 50.

The differences between my pre-season 50, which was published on the eve of the season and the post-season one below are stark.

I had three of my top 10 in the pre-season go down with season-ending injuries in the first round, and from there, we just knew that we were going to get a good rearrangement in this rendition of the 50.

One thing that probably hasn’t changed has been the domination of Crows’ players in the top-end of the 50. Without trying to give away too much here about who is number one, four Adelaide players made it inside the top 10, such was their impact on the season. Five Crows are inside the top 15 and seven all-up made the list.

Brisbane also had seven players that made the list on the back of a strong year that saw them a kick away from making back-to-back Grand Finals.

However, neither team have the most entrants. That honour goes to Melbourne, with eight players making the list. I won’t be entirely cruel to you readers here, so I’ll name the top Demon here before you go and peruse the list for you to come back and be critical of me.

Top Demon went to Lauren Pearce, who made the top five this year on the back of her exceptional extraction work out of ruck contests, but Tayla Harris’ first year as a Demon saw her very close to taking that mantle as the best Melbourne player out of this list.

Every team features in this instalment of the top 50, maybe the last time for a while we have that as we get 18 clubs entering the competition in August (supposedly, but nothing has yet to be confirmed – hurry up!).

So without further ado, let’s bring in season 2022’s top 50 players!

  1. WOW ! – a lot of work Doc – Thanks. – I reckon your Top 10 are ‘spot on’, having watched most of the Games in the AFLW’s short season. – My big interest will be what the expansion does. Your # 1, Emily Bates got some “Men size” offers; but her heart is in Brisbane. Incidentally, Orla O’Dwyer didn’t go back to Limerick for their ‘Gaelic football’, but stayed in Brisbane for shoulder surgery – to be ready for the next season. – The Bris Lions ‘sisterhood’ is very strong.

  2. I appreciate how much you’re willing to shake things up with your lists. I feel like Sarah Black’s (for example) tend to be a bit historic and prior reputation plays too much of a part. Great list.
