Things are never as bad as they seem, and things are never as good as they seem. Footy clubs and their supporters would be wise to heed those words.
At the end of the day, all the posturing, good news stories, and damage control, all fade away. And what you’re left with is the cold hard reality that one team won the flag, and everyone else has to make do with small victories.
Not that this was a small victory for the Saints – they now sit at 5-5 with a tough run over the next three weeks that’ll probably define their season, but against a Richmond team that definitely came to play, banking the four points was a lot more important than anyone will admit.
As for the Tigers, small victories about sums up what you’re looking for, at this point. Rebuilds are not quick, and even though we’re all aware of that, I hear the rumblings from the Tiger Faithful – they have become accustomed to success, and they want more.
They see their club, riddled by injury, and struggling to keep their head above water, but they also see great potential. It just takes time to turn that potential into something special.
It is with that in mind that we launch into my last review of the weekend, and we look for the small victories in both the win, and the loss, for the respective clubs.
This is just the introduction – the remainder of this article is for our members. They support me, and I provide for them. It’s a good deal.
Oh… a Mongrel paywall… the worst of all paywalls. We’re all in on the 2026 AFL season. Player articles, stats, awards, game coverage. Dump the mainstream lip service and dive into articles like this – you will never look back. If you don’t want to, that’s fine. I consider it your loss as we get into the grind of the season, and you’re stuck with the stuff that’s frustrated you for years.
