R7 – Melbourne v Richmond – The Big Questions

The Dees moved to 5-2 with their ANZAC Eve win over the Tigers, as Kysaiah Pickett had a night out, winning the Checker Hughes Medal as the best player on the park.

The Tigers came out hard, with Noah Balta thrown into the ruck to combat Max Gawn, and he sparked an early offensive from the Tigers, who were well and truly up for the fight.

However, as tends to happen when a young team is involved, the experience and strength of the Demons was too much, as they extended their lead in the last quarter to run out 54 point winners.

On paper, you look at this result and think the Dees just strolled to the win, but that was far from the case. Richmond were still in touch as we turned for home, but those young legs… they just couldn’t keep it up.

The night belonged to Kysaiah Pickett, however, as he climbed into the air to take a mark of the year contender in the dying minutes, capping off another brilliant outing.

A heap to get through in this one – let’s narrow the focus onto the kids, the standouts, and those who perhaps could have done a little better at points. Let’s jump into The Mongrel’s Big Questions.

Oh… a Mongrel paywall… the worst of all paywalls. We’re all in on the 2026 AFL season. Player articles, stats, awards, game coverage. Dump the mainstream lip service and dive into articles like this – you will never look back. If you don’t want to, that’s fine. I consider it your loss as we get into the grind of the season, and you’re stuck with the stuff that’s frustrated you for years.
