The Frontrunner – 2024 Recruit of the Year Award.

Coming into the 2024 AFL season, there had been some moves that everyone considered “big”.

Brodie Grundy heading to the Swans was the marquee signing off the off-season, but even that came with a lot of speculation as to whether he would be able to perform up to the standards he set a few years back. There was also plenty of interest in the acquisitions of Ben McKay at Essendon, Jack Ginnivan at Hawthorn, and Liam Henry at St Kilda, all switching teams after the 2023 season.

Port Adelaide were very active in the trade period, revamping their back-six with the addition of Esava Ratugolea and Brandon Zerk-Thatcher, but whilst most of the press seemed to focus on the work of getting the Big Sav to Alberton (and the Cats playing hardball to shift him), it has been the recruitment of Zerk-Thatcher that has been the real winner as we head into Round Six.
