It started strangely in Blacktown, with the lights going out and causing a delay, before a red-bellied black snake made its way onto the field.
Amazingly, the same snake handler that caught one there during the AFLW season was on hand, and he snapped up that wriggly little thing before it could do any damage. The league should probably check that he’s not releasing snakes onto the field in order to go collect it and get his head on TV. Like those fireman who lights fires.
Anyway, after a hot Sydney day, the game was played in humid conditions. Really, it looked like a Brisbane night game, with the ball slipping and sliding all over the place, at times.
Not only did this favour the Lions, given they’re used to those conditions, but it also worked against the Swans, who threw plenty of their tall timber into the team to see who amongst them would stand up. More on that below.
The Lions established their lead in the second quarter and never looked back, cruising to a 25-point win behind Hugh McCluggage, Dayne Zorko, and a stingy backline group.
Let’s jump into the nooks and crannies of the AAMI Series clash between the Lions and Swans.
