TEN THINGS I LEARNT AFTER ROUND SIX.
1 – Melbourne have decided to take a gap year.
Last year the players worked hard and were good students. They were all ready to hit higher education this year, but once they got a taste of Summer, they just wanted to play some more. So they decided a gap year would sort that out. The problem is that sometimes a gap year lasts for several!!
2 – Essendon supporters need to time their booing a little better.
We all know they weren’t booing Pendles. But it doesn’t make it any less disrespectful. The last thing we needed, however, was for the parallels drawn between this and the Adam Goodes saga and renewed calls for “banning the boo”.
3 – Apparently the umpires on Anzac Day got all those decisions right…
… said no-one ever except the umpiring department. It seems that lately our umpires don’t make mistakes. There have been quite a few instances already this season where decisions have come under scrutiny only for us to be told the umpires “got it right”. And it’s invariably a spokesman for the umpires’ department. It may be time we need an independent body to review the performance of the whistleblowers. Either that or it might be time for a Royal Commission.
4 – How much better has Travis Boak been since relinquishing the captaincy?
Travis Boak is having his best season in ages. The captaincy seems to have been a burden to him. Some people just don’t like the added responsibility.
5 – Gold Coast could still finish last.
I’m sensing another season where the Suns start strong and fall away badly. Some beltings are on the horizon.
6 – One easy way to ensure Saint Kilda lose form is to start tipping them.
I haven’t tipped the Saints since Round 1. They kept winning so I thought I’d jump on this week believing Adelaide were no world- beaters. Well, from quarter time, they played their worst footy for the year, and I’m convinced the whole playing group did it purely to spite me.
7 – GWS are officially the big brother in Sydney.
Remember that little kid who got bullied by his older brother only to end up six inches taller and 20kg’s heavier than his older brother? That’s a fair comparison between GWS and Sydney.
8 – It’s terribly hard to get a read on Freo, but I think they might be good!
Two weeks ago I thought Ross Lyon might’ve been auditioning for the Carlton job. Hold that thought. A win in Adelaide this week and the prospect of finals gets real.
9 – The Blues are no longer easy-beats – but they are still “beats”.
The frustrating thing about being a Carlton supporter is the patronising way everyone keeps telling us how much better we look while we keep on finding new and interesting ways to lose.
10 – Gary Rohan looks much better in blue and white hoops.
Put your hand up if you thought Geelong were making a mistake when they took him on. No doubt he has talent, but he seemed too inconsistent to gamble on. Maybe the fact he has red hair and was wearing a red guernsey was too much red. He doesn’t even look like a ranga any more!
P.S. Tipping is getting easier. Plenty of people tipped 9. Sanity is slowly being restored
