Round Two saw two new members joining the AFL Defensive Double-Double Club, with a stalwart of the game adding another to his list of big games in the process.
In 2020, I started recording the stat known as the Defensive Double-Double (D2D), which is when a player has double figures in both one-percenters and intercept possessions in a single game. I started researching this when I was on a quest to see if any player had ever achieved the Defensive Triple-Double (one-percenters/intercepts/rebounds). At that stage, it turned out only one player had ever done that – Robbie Tarrant in Round 17, 2019. He was joined by Dougal Howard in 2021. Amazingly, both these guys achieved the milestone in losses.
But not James Sicily – he joined the party in Round Ten, 2022 with a huge game as the Hawks downed the top-four Lions in Tasmania. In a way, I was kind of proud of him, coming back from a knee injury to do this. He then added two more of the achievement in Rounds 12 and 16, which really, given how rare this is, was ridiculous.
Jacob Weitering demonstrated just how important he is to Carlton, with a virtuoso performance in the 2023 Preliminary Final, notching his first-ever D3D.
And lastly, Jeremy McGovern turned back the clock… to a time that never existed, I suppose, as he notched his first Defensive Triple-Double against the Giants in 2024, notching 11 one-percenters, 10 intercepts, and 10 rebound 50s. And then, he did it again, just to show you it wasn’t a fluke, notching his second in Round 22, 2024.
Anyway, I found the concept of the D2D something to keep an eye on. Any way you slice it, it would mean that the defensive player would be responsible for cutting off or killing at least 20 opposition forward thrusts… an impressive number.
So, I started to keep a record as to who has accomplished this, and since then, I have updated this every week, because I hope you enjoy this kind of stuff as much as I do. So, here’s the complete D2D list as it stands after Round Zero, 2026
For the record, Jacob Weitering is the only man to have achieved the more-elusive D3D in a final, picking up ten one-percenters, ten intercepts, and 11 rebound 50s in the 2023 Preliminary Final.
That is some game…
ROUND TWO ADDITIONS
JORDON BUTTS – ADELAIDE
STAT LINE – 11 INTERCEPTS, 10 ONE-PERCENTERS
There are not many who can say they have beaten Sam Darcy over the course of a game, but Jordon Butts is definitely one. Taking front position and backing himself in, he had a blistering start to the game, and kept the Crows in it.
He was far from perfect, and beaten a couple of times in the second half, but as a bloke who many didn’t have in their best 23 before the season, this was a big outing for him. This is the first D2D of his career.
BUKU KHAMIS – WESTERN BULLDOGS
STAT LINE – 10 INTERCEPTS, 12 ONE-PERCENTERS
Six months ago, it seemed like he was ready to bolt out of the Kennel. Now, he looks vital to their 2026 success… and might just stick around.
Holding together a patchwork Bulldog defence, he combined beautifully with James O’Donnell and Rory Lobb to combat one of the more formidable forward setups in the AFL.
The second player of the round notching his maiden D2D.
TOM BARRASS – HAWTHORN
STAT LINE – 11 INTERCEPTS, 12 ONE-PERCENTERS
His first in Hawks colours, Barrass controlled defensive fifty whilst taking on one of the toughest assignments in the game – shutting down Charlie Curnow.
And he did that in emphatic fashion, limiting the Sydney spearhead to one touch after the main break.
