The Summer of 2023 held an air of expectation for Blues supporters.
They were up and about. After decades in the wilderness, the sweet scent of success was once again wafting around the club. They felt close. They were close. They went down to a very good side in the penultimate game of the season, but they’d tasted finals again… and they’d won a couple.
The Blues were back!
After a 16-point loss to the Brisbane Lions in the Preliminary Final, the Carlton Football Club were finally knocking on the door again. And more than that, there were times when they appeared to be ready to kick it down.
Sadly, what has followed for Carlton is reminiscent of OJ Simpson playing the tragically inept Norbderg in the original Naked Gun series. His attempt to kick the door down saw his foot get stuck in the woodwork. After struggling to get himself loose and enter the room, he was shot down by those he intended to surprise, leaned on wet paint, burnt himself on the stove, and bumped his head, as well.
In two short seasons, the Blues went from contender to… whatever state they’re in right now. The Nordberg state, I suppose. There are some who believe the short-term future of the club will see its now-30-year premiership drought extend by a few years.
But what about the big picture?
What does this mean for the Blues down the track?
And how has the trade of their two-time Coleman Medallist impacted the club?

Oh… a Mongrel paywall… the worst of all paywalls. Why? Because HB believes work such as this is worth a mere pittance per day. Whilst you could stick with Caro’s Arrow or Kane’s Vol-Kane-O, you’ll get your 500 words in the newspaper and be happy… when they’re not on holiday. The Mongrel NEVER stops. Trades, Free Agency, Historical articles, Draft, Pre-Season, Practice Games… we’re all in. You could dump the mainstream and dive into articles like this. If you don’t want to, that’s fine. You’re welcome to join and keep reading if you do.
