Let ‘Em Go? Or Make ‘Em Stay?

Behind the requests and the potential trade demands, there is a worrying element at two of the AFL’s biggest and formerly most successful clubs.

These two powerhouse clubs have already lost big name players to free agency, but the exodus could get a lot worse if players get their way.

At Essendon, both their captain, Zach Merrett, and one of their brightest, if oft-injured, stars have expressed the desire to leave the club. Meanwhile, over at Ikon Park, the Blues have been quick to shut down any possibility that their superstar Dual-Coleman Medallist, Charlie Curnow, would be wearing new colours in 2026.

However, whilst the clubs are well within their rights to demand these stars of the game uphold their end of the deal – they were all content to sign the deals that offered the security they were after, at the time – there remains a question whether it is the right move for the team, player, and the overall club environment.
