Last week, I commenced a new series here, at The Mongrel, where I threw the floor open to you guys.
Basically, I provide you the choice of a couple of different things, and you get to decide which one you hold in higher esteem. Furthermore, you were asked to justify your choices.
It was an arousing success!
Did I mean ‘rousing’?
… Maybe.
Anyway, many years ago, back when the internet was still fun and not filled with whiny bitches (for the most part), I used to frequent a wrestling message board called The Sell. Good blokes talking wrestling, not a lot of bullshit, and people knew what they were talking about.
One of the blokes who was heavily involved used to post a simple voting format he called “This or That?” And you basically were given two or three options and had to choose one, and justify your answer. The choices were usually a performer, a tag team, or a certain match, and you simply picked the one you preferred.
So simple that even a Collingwood supporter could do it… which has led me to try it here.
Below, there are five choices to make. Some are historic, some are featuring current players, and some are likely to cause debate about who was genuinely better.
That’s the hope, anyway.
So, in honour of the long-gone website, The Sell (I still have a t-shirt that fits… yay me for not becoming too much of a fatty!) let’s jump into HB’s AFL This or That?
WHO IS THE BEST LEADER AMONGST THESE THREE – TRENT COTCHIN, JOEL SELWOOD, OR LUKE HODGE?
I’m really interested in the options of those without a team-bias in this one. All led their teams to flags, all were inspirational, and all were the type of leaders I’d follow into battle.
But if you had to pick just one to captain your team… who would it be?
IF YOU COULD CHOOSE THE CAREER OF GARY ABLETT JR, OR THAT OF DUSTIN MARTIN, WHO DO YOU PICK?
Gaz is regarded as the greatest player of the modern era – two Brownlows, five MVP Awards, and eight AA selections combine to create an incredible CV.
But Dusty has those three Norm Smiths… the best player in the biggest game.
If you could have walked in their boots through one of those careers, which do you choose?
WHO DO YOU THINK WON THE CAREY V JAKOVICH BATTLES IN THE 1990S?
I wrote an article on it a while back – it was discussed on Carey’s podcast when he had Jako on as a guest. Guess I made the medium-time, huh?
Carey the dominant forward, Jakovich the powerful defender. When they clashed, there were some games where one of them was clearly on top, and others where it was about even. Who got the better?
I will add this, it is much harder to win a contest as a forward than it is to break even as a defender… but don’t let me influence you. 😉
WHO IS THE PICK OF THE 400-GAMERS? PENDLES, BURGOYNE, BARTLETT, FLETCHER, TUCK, OR HARVEY?
How do you pick this one? Does recency bias have an impact on your decision, or do you pick the bloke I would – the one who looks a bit like Gollum?
OF THE FOUR MODERN DYNASTIES, WHICH WOULD YOU RATE THE HIGHEST?
BRISBANE 2001-03
GEELONG 2007-22
HAWTHORN – 2008-15
RICHMOND – 2017-2020
Tough one – the flags in short order are hard to overlook, but the Cats’ continued excellence, even with an 11-year span between flags is impressive, too.
If you were to have the ideal run, which of these four dynasties would you prefer to be part of?
There you go – a little more food for thought. Heavily opinion-based, meaning there is no real wrong answer to any of them. Let’s see how you go.
Like this content? You could buy me a coffee – I do like coffee, but there is no guarantee I won’t use it to buy a doughnut… I like them more. And I am not brought to you by Sportsbet or Ladbrokes… or Bet365, or any of them.
