Mongrel Time Machine – Hawthorn v St Kilda Round Four 1986

Sometimes, a gem pops up unexpectedly.

As I sat down to watch this game, recently discovered by the son-of-gun, Rhett Bartlett, I was looking forward to a full forward showdown. Jason Dunstall at one end, and Tony Lockett at the other – 15 goals between them. Enough to warm the cockles of any footy fan from the 1980.

And yet, as the game unfolded, as always seems to happen, other little aspects emerged that grabbed my attention.

Yes, seven goals to Plugger and eight to Dunstall would be the talking points for most in any age, but there was so much more to this game that seemed to take precedence.

And so it was that I got my trusty notebook out, jotted down a multitude of stats that weren’t kept back in those days, and dissected a game that hadn’t seen the light of day in years.

It was Round Four, 1986, and the Saints welcomed the Hawks to Moorabbin.

Oh… a Mongrel paywall… the worst of all paywalls. Why? Because HB believes work such as this is worth a mere pittance per day. Whilst you could stick with Caro’s Arrow or Kane’s Vol-Kane-O, you’ll get your 500 words in the newspaper and be happy… when they’re not on holiday. The Mongrel NEVER stops. Trades, Free Agency, Draft, Stats, Pre-Season, Practice Games… we’re all in. You could dump the mainstream and dive articles like this. If you don’t want to, that’s fine.
