So, it’s not often I take much from the commentary of a footy broadcast. Usually it’s a combination of BT getting distracted, and Cameron Ling agreeing with Luke Darcy, who adds the words “you would’ve thought” about seven or eight times during the broadcast, and I just end up muting the lot of them.
However, a little discussion during the season a few years back revolved around the best all-time West Coast defenders cropped up as part of the telecast, and it actually got my attention.
The conversation seemed skewed toward Jakovich on the basis of his four club champion awards. Whilst that was impressive, you could argue that McGovern’s five All-Australian berths were just as meaningful. Perhaps even more so, particularly when you look at the competition for that spot at CHB across the league. Yes, Jakovich won his B&F awards in a team choc-full of stars, but Gov was beating out the best the game has to offer in his position, and injuries aside, has done it over the long haul. Yet, the opinions of the “experts” seemed unwavering.
So, what is it that sets Glen Jakovich apart from Jeremy McGovern in the eyes of these experts?
