I don’t think I’d be alone if I stated this was an outcome that both teams would have been disappointed with as they walked off the park.
For the Hawks, after a five goal lead at quarter time, there was a big chance to run up a score on the Blues. The distance on the scoreboard was around the same at halftime, but the flow of the game made it feel as though the margin was twice as much.
The Hawks like to leave the door open.
As for the Blues, on a night where they were farewelling a favourite son and celebrating a milestone of another, they hit this game as flat as the bottle of lemonade I was saving, after my daughter left the lid off it… yet again.
In the end, it was the Hawks by 24 points. It was as close as the Blues got, but it was never quite close enough.
The Hawks got a huge lift from their forward line, with Calsher Dear, Jack Gunston, and Mitch Lewis providing great targets, whilst once again, it seemed like the Blues were operating under the Charlie Curnow-or-bust model up forward. And once he drifted out of the game, the entire contest felt as though it was in a holding pattern of around the same quarter-time margin.
Anyway, lots to get through in this one. It’s not all good for the Hawks, and surprisingly, it is not all bad for the Blues, either.
Here’s HB’s Loves and Hates from this one.

Oh… a Mongrel paywall… the worst of all paywalls. Why? Because HB believes work such as this is worth a mere pittance per day. Whilst you could stick with Caro’s Arrow or Kane’s Vol-Kane-O, you’ll get your 500 words in the newspaper and be happy, or you could dive articles like this, clocking in at 3.2K. If you don’t want to, that’s fine. You’re welcome to join and keep reading if you do.
