R19 – GWS v Essendon – The Big Statements

It was just as well the Giants brought their own big, big sound to Marvel Stadium, as the sparse crowd at the Essendon home game had very little to make noise about through the first half.

GWS went into the main break with a healthy 37-point win, and by that stage, the game was all but over. The Bombers had thrown everything they had at the Giants, but inaccuracy has a way of sapping the energy from a team . And if that was the case in this one, you could hardly blame Essendon for being listless.

At one stage, the Dons had managed 0.8 to seven straight goals from the Giants, as the visitors punished them on the scoreboard.

Some would argue that the Giants should have gone on with it, and the experts on the Fox Footy panel believed they let themselves down. I disagree.

Winning on the road is no joke. This is a matchup the Giants have not enjoyed in recent years, so to suddenly expect them to come ion and blow Essendon out of the water, even with their copious number of injuries, was a little naive.

In the end, you look at the score and it is a 48-point win. You’d take that any day of the week. On this occasion, the Giants took it on a Thursday night, and for the time being, moved into the top four, as a result.

Let’s jump into The Mongrel’s Big Statements.

Oh… a Mongrel paywall… the worst of all paywalls. Why? Because HB believes work such as this is worth a mere pittance per day. Whilst you could stick with Caro’s Arrow or Kane’s Vol-Kane-O, you’ll get your 500 words in the newspaper and be happy, or you could dive articles like this, clocking in at over 3.0k.
