R17 – GWS v West Coast – HB’s Loves and Hates

There was a big, big sound in the west of the… country, as the Giants hit the road to face the Eagles at Optus Stadium.

Right from the outset, there was a significant gap in class apparent, as the Giants moved the ball from defence to attack with precision and ease. Their willingness to run hard, at times, left the Eagles looking flat-footed, and as we approached the quarter-time siren, the game felt over, with the Giants holding a 27-point lead.

Not an insurmountable margin at face value, but the style of play from both sides at this point indicated that it may well grow much larger, much faster. The Giants looked hungry. The Eagles seemed tired, and even a little fed up with what’s been another trying season to date.

West Coast did improve their output as the game progressed, but the horse had well and truly bolted, and with a plethora of running options powering through the middle and the wings, the Giants cruised to a 59-point win.

There was plenty of feeling in this one, with Harley Reid tangling with both versions of the Greene/Green combination, but it was young stars like Finn Callaghan and Darcy Jones who stole the show, punishing the slower West Coast midfield.

Time to jump into HB’s Loves and Hates from this one.

Oh… a Mongrel paywall… the worst of all paywalls. Why? Because HB believes work such as this is worth a mere pittance per day. Whilst you could stick with Caro’s Arrow or Kane’s Vol-Kane-O, you’ll get your 500 words in the newspaper and be happy, or you could dive into this review. If you don’t want to, that’s fine.
