The Risks and Rewards of the Kysaiah Pickett Deal

We wake this morning, to the official news that has been rampant on the AFL rumour mill for the last couple of days – that Kysaiah Pickett has signed a seven-year extension with the Melbourne Football Club that makes him the longest-contracted player in the AFL at the moment.

Dollars aside, this is a huge win for the Dees, who have been inundated with negative press about players wanting to leave, and how poor their culture is.

To me, the funniest part of this is watching AFL journalists who reported that Pickett was heading back to Western Australia, backtrack as they report the deal, with some adding “he might still leave at some point…” as though that excuses just how wrong they had it.

I have to clarify, here – these are people with a direct line to clubs, the players, and the player managers, but somehow, they all managed to get this one horribly wrong.

That aside, it is important to look at what this signing means for the Dees right now, Pickett, and the future of the Melbourne Football Club, so let’s do that.
