The rain came in sideways before the game started, and it set the tone for the evening at the Adelaide Oval. It was always going to be the team that went hardest for longest that was going to walk out winners, and when it counted, the Adelaide Crows rose to the challenge
The Crows had a heap of pressure on them. This was their opportunity to stake a claim as a legitimate contender. Who better to claim as a scalp than the reigning premiers?
The Lions looked like they had this game in their tenuous grasp for three quarters. Unheaded, they seemed to be able to find an answering goal whenever the Crows got too close, and they did it with the type of class that indicated they would be ready to fight off any serious charge..
And then it happened.
The Crows hit the last quarter like a hurricane, and with three goals in the first six minutes of game time, they turned the contest on its head. Riley Thilthorpe, Ben Keays, and Jordan Dawson all hit the scoreboard to give the Crows the lead, and try as they might, the Lions just couldn’t hit the scoreboard. They hit just about everything else – the points, the boundary line, people in the crowd, but the big sticks continued to elude them.
The Lions peppered their attacking fifty, but the Crows managed to repel them just enough times to run out five-point winners.
This is the type of win that good clubs build seasons on.
