If you looked over the AFL fixture upon its release and saw the Round 12 clash between the Swans and the Crows, you might have been forgiven for thinking you’d see one of the established powerhouses of the league taking on one of the rising teams in the game.
That was how these clubs were viewed heading into the season. It should have been a ripping contest.
What we’ve seen since the season began is an Adelaide Crows team that have finally grown into the huge potential they’ve threatened the league with for a couple of seasons. And on the other hand, we’ve seen the fall of the Swans from Grand Finalists, to a team without a soul. Because that’s the way they played in this one – soullessly.
On a night where the 2005 Sydney heroes gathered to celebrate their twenty-year premiership anniversary, the current version of Sydney were embarrassed by the Crows. Slaughtered all over the park, the Swans were meek in the presence of a murder of Crows that monstered them in contests, forced them into countless errors, and treated them with contempt in the contest. It was the metaphorical changing of the guard, as Adelaide declared they were the real deal, and after a quick third-quarter flurry, the Swans went quietly into the night, defeated and broken.
HB has plenty to look at in this one, and given he has been a bit of a fan of the Swans for three seasons, there will be some pretty harsh home truths in this one, accompanied by the highlights of what could amount to a season-making win for the Crows.
