“The Bombers did enough.”
They were the first words uttered as the coverage switched back to the studio crew at Fox Footy following the 2025 Dreamtime game at the MCG, and I don’t think you could get a better line to sum up proceedings.
It was a tight tussle, with both defences on top for large portions of the game, but the longer the contest progressed, the more it looked like an Essendon win. With the dominant presence of mature bodies at stoppages around the ground, the Bombers were able to slowly strangle the Richmond attack, and run the young Tigers off their legs.
The game was highlighted by first-gamer, Angus Clarke, slotting three first-half goals in a stunning debut effort on the wing that made you love footy. Seriously, moments like that, with his family in the stands… magic.
It was not all good news for the Dons, however, with Zach Reid off with “hamstring tightness”, whilst Kyle Langford is set to miss time after injuring a quad in the second quarter.
The Tigers were tough, and there are plenty of positives to take out of this one, but in the end, there were just too many kids out there attempting to do the job of men. They’ll get there, and probably a little too quickly for some, but right now, they are a big work in progress.
