R7 – Brisbane v St Kilda – HB’s Loves and Hates

As I sat and watched this game, it become more apparent to me that this was a battle between the “haves” of the AFL, and the “have nots”.

That is not a shot at the Saints – I do like what they’re building, but when compared to the Lions, it strongly indicates the stark differences between the lists. I’ll go into that in more detail as part of the review.

As you’d expect, I guess.

Brisbane got a fast start in this one, and if not for inaccuracy, could have put it to bed nice and early. With ten shots at goal to just two for the Saints, the Lions failed to capitalise on their opportunities, and even though they corrected things in the second stanza, the Saints remained in touch at halftime, as a result.

The boys from Moorabbin put a scare through the reigning premiers in the third, as they opened up with two quick goals and attacked the contest with aggression that had been missing in the first half. However, the Lions continued to grind, and as the contest once again began ebbing and flowing, it as Brisbane winning the quarter by four points.

The Saints had fired their last shots.

The Lions play Marvel well, now with 12 of their last 14 games at the venue resulting in wins. It was always going to be a big ask for the Saints to get over Brisbane, and it proved to be a bridge too far in this one.

They’re the premiers for a reason, y’know?

HB has all the details with his loves and hates.
