R7 – Melbourne v Richmond – The Big Statements

It was suddenly a fixture that had more interest for the casual supporter.

I can remember a bit of chatter before Round Six – you know the sort; people whining about marquee games, who deserves them, and who doesn’t. That type of chatter.

However, as Round Six concluded, we heard that chatter become a little quieter. Richmond picked up their second win of the season, knocking over the Suns, whilst the Dees hit the winners’ list with their first victory of the year.

And just like that, the ANZAC Eve clash between the Demons and Tigers meant a little more to both teams.

All that said, most expected Melbourne to roll over Richmond. In terms of elite talent, they have them covered on most lines, and with matchwinners in the midfield, the Dees started well before something strange occurred.

Those young Tigers dug in and refused to lay down.

In a tight first half, Richmond were right there, just four points adrift of Melbourne, and there might have been a few tense Dees fans as the teams made their way to the sheds.

Whatever was said at halftime to the Demons, they certainly took notice. Their top-liners came out swinging in the third quarter, connecting several times, resulting in six goals, as they put the necessary distance between them and their young opponents, and cruised to a 20-point win.

Lots to get through in this one – let’s head straight into The Mongrel’s Big Statements and work our way through what went down in this one.
