A short week, this week. No time to screw around. I have five articles after this to do produce in the next two days.
Let’s jump into the winners and losers of Round Six
THE WINNERS
NICK DAICOS
All the talk was about the tagging him.
All the results indicated that Brisbane should have, right from the outset.
There was no stopping Nick Daicos in this one, as he powered the Pies to a big road win.
GEORGE HEWETT
Continued a stand-out season, and should be miles ahead in the John Nicholls Medal, at this stage.
Hewett had 34 touches, 21 contested possessions, and 12 clearances, to become the second member of the 30-20-10 club in 2025.
ELIJAH HEWETT
A real bright spot for the Eagles, and one to watch.
He was like lightning at stoppages, hit the front and centre position hard, and looked dangerous every time he was around the footy. A career-high 22 touches and two goals… the Eagles have found one.
Fingers crossed he can stay healthy.
PETER WRIGHT
Ah yes, Two-Metre Peter. I was told he wasn’t in Essendon’s best 22 anymore, a few weeks back.
He may beg to differ.
He snagged six majors and dragged the Bombers back into it after Jake Waterman’s monster first quarter.
KYSAIAH PICKETT
The first of three, count-em, three Dees!
Some called it an audition.
Whether it was or not, Kozzie turned it on against the Dockers, snagging five to light up the MCG.
Add in 24 touches, and he was right up for this game.
HARRISON PETTY
I have to eat some words here.
I’ve been guilty of saying that Petty does not belong in the forward line, but with their backs against the wall, the Dees looked to him to perform.
With four goals, he delivered.
MAX GAWN
A domination.
Turned the clock back, even just 12 months, to remind people just how good his best is.
28 disposals, 31 hit outs, ten clearances, and 12 score involvements in the most complete ruck performance of the season. It is the eighth time Gawn has recorded a 30-20-10 stat line. The next best is five.
TAYLOR WALKER
On a day when nobody could get the ball to go the way they wanted, Tex could.
He only finished with two goals, but in adverse condition, he had 17 touches and was one of the more effective ball users on the ground.
NICK VLASTUIN
The Red Menace’s best game of the season, as he collected the lazy 15 intercepts and 11 rebound fifties.
That makes him the first player of the 2025 season to notch a Defensive Double-Double. Keep an eye out for our DPOY column over the next day or two. I have a feeling he’ll feature very prominently.
ZAK BUTTERS
The hardest player in the game as Port knocked over the Swans.
Cracked in, used fast hands, and did everything you could ask for from a leader. For a small bloke, he sure makes others walk taller.
BONT AND LIBBA
The old Dogs were great, with the skipper coming back to step in and help his old mate, Libba.
And with 20 touches and two goals in the first half, it was just in time!
And then, of course, there was Libba. Please see below in the Brad Hill section.
FOOTY FANS
Rejoice – Sam Darcy does not require ACL surgery. Sure, he is out for a while, but not the entire season. Good news for everyone.
BAILEY SMITH
Loved his antics. Loved that he courted the crowd heat.
He played the heel and loved it. On Wrestlemania weekend, Bailey Smith was the star.
THE LOSERS
CHARLIE CAMERON
Can’t get near it, at the moment, and it is only really noticeable when the Lions don’t play well.
Brisbane need Kai Lohmann back, because it is becoming painfully apparent that Charlie is nearing the edge of the cliff, and has to fight his way back.
NICK LARKEY AND CAM ZURHAAR
They get a pass far too often.
Remember a few years back when Jacob Weitering didn’t make the AA team, and Cam Zurhaar commented on social media it was because Larkey kicked seven on him.
Well, Larkey couldn’t even get eight kicks on him this time on Weitering, and Zurhaar has managed nine goals in six games. Hardly setting the world on fire.
Lots of LOLZ
LIAM RYAN
Two tough shots, and then one running snap from a play-on situation that he botched, as well.
Finished with 0.2, and in a tight game, could have been the difference-maker.
SEAN DARCY
Destroyed.
Comprehensively destroyed by Max Gawm, and the longer the game went, the worse it got. Looks fitter, but without game time, was run over.
KIEREN BRIGGS
Completely shown up by Reilly O’Brien.
I have to admit, I did not see this one coming.
MAC ANDREW
Loves puffing his chest out.
Hates putting his body on the line.
You can’t have both without copping some criticism.
TOM MCCARTIN
Was thrown forward again, and went a long way to proving that as a key forward, he makes a good defender.
Made Esava Ratugolea look like an All-Australian. Maybe this should be Dean Cox instead of Tom.
BRAD HILL
Memo to Brad – don’t try to run away from Libba.
Just don’t.
JAMES SICILY
Horrible. Just horrible against the Cats. Pushed, jostled, dropped marks, shanked kicks, and blamed umpires.
The ultimate non-captain’s game.
OLLIE HENRY
Getting a bit tired of waiting for this bloke to do something. On a day when the Cats were great, Henry was bloody ordinary again.
At 8.5 touches and 0.8 goals per game, he is not holding up his end of the bargain at Geelong.
DAVID KING
“You’ve gotta move Danger into the midfield,” he said. “The game is on the line,” he said.
Chris Scott left him forward, Danger kicked three and dished one to Max Holmes that he should have kicked. And the Cats won.
Maybe David’s computer told him to say it?
Feel free to add your own. There are always plenty on either side.
As always, massive thanks to those who support this work. You can see the amount of care that goes into it. I love footy, I love writing about it, and I hope you enjoy reading it. Without you, this whole thing falls over. Sincerely… thank you – HB
