R4 – Collingwood v Carlton – The Big Questions

I’ll start this review by asking a question – would you prefer to roll out onto the field with a bunch of old blokes who know how to play, or a bunch of young blokes who have little idea what they’re doing?

That’s what we got in this one, with the Magpies fielding the oldest team to run out onto an AFL ground, and the Blues doing the equivalent of running around like chooks with their heads cut off for long periods of time.

On a wet night at the MCG, over 82,000 turned up to see the old Magpies use the ‘premiership quarter’ to bury the Blues, dominating possession, and putting 4.6 on the board, whilst Carlton managed just the single point.

The margin probably flatters the Blues. It felt as though Collingwood were in full control of the second half, and really looked like the superior team. Carlton… it just felt like they were out on their legs, unable to go as hard, or for as long as their opponents.

Sounds like an ad for Collingwood viagra.

I digress…

When the game was there to be won, it was Collingwood making the play. They were first to the ball, head over it, winning possession. The Blues, in contrast, had too many passengers.

Again.

Lots to get through in this one – what does this mean for Carlton? Are the Pies ready to launch at another flag tilt? Is this the game that justifies the recruitment of Lachie Schultz? And if Tom De Koning is worth over a million per year, how much is Darcy Cameron going to command when it is time to negotiate his deal in 12 months time?

Let’s jump into The Mongrel’s Big Questions.
