R3 – Essendon v Port Adelaide – The Big Questions

Can an entertaining last quarter of footy make up for a first half that made me want to go and watch a Korean soap opera?

For the record, I have never watched a Korean Soap Opera, but Mrs Mongrel tells me they use weird sound effects like “boing” when someone is surprised. Even if it is supposed to be a dramatic moment.

Someone gets pregnant? “Doink!”

Someone cures cancer? “Splong!”

Gotta say… I was tempted.

With just seven goals under the roof at the main break, the game needed something special, and the Bombers provided it in the last quarter, taking the game on, controlling the corridor, and using pressure to start counter-attacks.

It was Xavier Duursma lifting his work rate. It was Sam Durham providing the defensive attention on Connor Rozee. And it was Kako, Merrett, Draper, and Caddy, all stepping up when required.

The Bombers avoided going 0-3 for just the second time since the 1960s, and in the process, sent Port Adelaide to 1-2, and made them look leg-weary in the process.

What does it all mean? Who were the standouts? And who were the ones that stepped aside when it was their time to go?

Well, that’s what we’re going to look for as The Mongrel dives into The Big Questions stemming from the Bombers’ win over Port.
