I love this time of year – we’re getting close to the real stuff. And whilst teams are now commencing their match-sims, there remains plenty of interest in how teams are faring in intra-club games.
Why are these games important? Aren’t they just a bit of a run-around amongst themselves?
Well, yes and no.
This is where players either get their foot in the door, or slam it shut, depending on their position in the side. A young ruck may stand up, an emerging on-baller may push his way into the main rotation, or a veteran may find himself in a new role.
These games give the coaches an opportunity to experiment with their list and throw a few things at the wall. Let’s see if anything sticks.
There are a few of these games around at the moment, and I’ll be endeavouring to cover as many as I can. I’m starting with the Adelaide Crows, who visited Port Pirie on the Valentine’s Day.
