The Carlton Football Club limped into the finals in 2024.
After a season promising so much, the Blues flat out dropped their bundle and fell away, humiliated in the first half of footy of the Elimination Final against the Brisbane Lions. They conceded the first nine goals of the game to the eventual premiers, before Brisbane went into cruise control and ran out winners by 28 points.
Don’t call it a spirited comeback. It was wallpaper over a large crack in the team that many thought would give the flag a shake, themselves.
2024 was to be the year the Blues made the big step to be a legitimate contender again. After a Preliminary Final berth in 2023, Carlton looked like a million bucks at the halfway point of the latest season, but after occupying second place on the ladder as late as Round 19, their dramatic fall from grace paved the way for yet another disappointing result.
There are many reasons the Blues fell away so badly, however, as we head toward the Christmas break, my thoughts drift to one particular injury that all but sent Carlton’s hopes nosediving.
The injury to Charlie Curnow.
And now, they turn to the news that he has gone in for knee surgery.
