Versatility – The Word That Defines The 2025 Hawks

I usually try to steer clear of writing about the Hawks. I find I am accused of either going too hard, or too soft on them.

Most by fellow Hawthorn supporters, really. We’re a harsh bunch.

However, at this time of year, I start to peruse lists and possible lineups for the next season (no, I don’t have a life) and of all teams, the Hawks are now the most intriguing.

If there was one word to sum them up at this stage, and yes I am putting the potential for injury to one side for the time being, it is versatility.

Over the last little while, Sam Mitchell has constructed a team that boasts players who can switch roles at the drop of a hat. We saw it with James Sicily late in games in the second half of the season. Battling with a bung shoulder (technical term), he was able to swing forward and impact the scoreboard. Hell, he was one kick away from propelling the Hawks into a Prelim!

Karl Amon has switched to half-back like he was born to play the role.

Massimo D’Ambrosio went from a fringe half-back at Essendon to a star on the wing.

And Blake Hardwick switched between defence and attack and excelled in both roles.

In the 2024 post-season, they have added more pieces which could, and should, make this team even more dangerous.

Let’s explore.

Oh… you thought the Mongrel coverage ended with the final siren of the GF? No, no, no… HB works year-round, and he works for our members. He believes work such as this is worth a mere pittance per day. If you don’t, that’s fine. You’re welcome to join and keep reading if you do.
