To Deal, Or Not To Deal… Long-Term

Secure employment.

If you’re anything like me, you like to know where your next dollar is coming from. And whilst there are plenty in the AFL who have no issues when it comes to finding another gig once their current contract ends, there remains a certain sense of security you feel when you know you’re signed for the long haul.

The past few years have seen a rash of long-term deals, much to the chagrin of some media personalities. But do these critics have a point?

Whilst it can be construed as a gamble to have two and three year deals, particularly with so many players calling the shots in terms of where they wish to play their footy, signing a player on a long-term deal for five or more years at a time is just as risky. You just never know what will happen.

And so, with both Max King and Noah Balta signing huge contract extensions in the past couple of weeks, it is prudent to have a look at some of these long-term deals and how they’re panning out.
