I’ve watched a lot of footy over the years – the last seven years, in particular, as part of my role here at The Mongrel Punt. Along the way, you see stars shine, stars fade, and some even explode (someone please hide the location of catering from Luke Hodge…).
However, on the weekend, we got a bit of a treat.
Will Ashcroft was always going to be a good player. How good, we didn’t really know, but I get the feeling that being out of the limelight for close to a year, recovering from his ACL injury, took a bit of the spotlight off the kid.
When you combine that with the fact he plays in a smaller AFL market (and that is no disrespect to Brisbane supporters) away from the Melbourne spotlight, I cannot help but feel that Will Ashcroft snuck up on a few people late this season.
Many didn’t see him coming, and that allowed him to ambush the Giants in the Semi-Final this past weekend.
Make no mistake, the Lions were floundering against a GWS team that seemed to understand how to control them.
Yes, “seemed to”.

HB writes several articles per week at The Mongrel for our members. He owns the place, y’know? This is one of them, and he believes work such as this is worth a mere pittance per day. If you don’t, that’s fine. You’re welcome to join and keep reading if you do.
