R24 – Brisbane v Essendon – Optimist/Pessimist Review

A home final on the line, Joe Daniher’s 200th game, and Dyson Heppell’s belated last game. The stage was set for a big night at the Gabba, and the Lions and Bombers did not disappoint.

Well, they disappointed a bit, to be honest.

The Lions’ inaccuracy almost came back to bite them, with the Bombers kicking a few on the trot late in the game to get the margin back to an uncomfortable 19 points.

But Essendon had their fair share of gaffes, as well, mostly coming in defence as their vaudevillian key defenders attempted to dispose of the footy. More on that later.

In the end, the Lions secured their home final at the Gabba in two weeks time, whilst the Bombers lick their wounds, wonder where it all went wrong, and slink off to re-tool for the 2025 season.

But before we get ahead of ourselves, it’s time to highlight the best and worst from the final home and away game of the year for these clubs. Let’s jump into The Mongrel’s Optimist/Pessimist Review.

And believe me, I have plenty of both for either side.
