Big Game Feel – West Coast v Carlton

Talent versus system.

Where are the Blues at as they head into an unlikely do-or-die clash against the West Coast Eagles this weekend? Have they relied on pure talent for too long, or has their system developed to the point they can overcome the latest set of obstacles the footy gods have thrown into their path?

It seems amazing that just four or five weeks ago, Carlton were right up there in terms of premiership favouritism. In a season that has had more ups and downs than Joe Ganino’s underwear on his bucks night, the Blues have hit their lowest point at the worst possible time. Travelling to face a West Coast team with their tail up, and a two-game winning streak of their own, Carlton have their backs to the wall, and those who would usually step up and take charge are on the sidelines.

Most of them, anyway.

Opposite them, a team is starting to find themselves, as the West Coast Eagles are now playing with passion, and in stark contrast to both the Blues, and former versions of themselves, have a relatively healthy list.

Relatively is the operative word, here, as Tom Barrass is on that list, with his availability dependant on a test. That said, if there was ever a game for Barrass to miss, it would be this one, as the Blues are without their twin tower forward line of Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay.

A month ago, this game was pencilled in as a win for Carlton. It was all supposed to be part of their charge to September.

And now?

Now, it is a desperate fight to stay in the hunt – not for top two, not for top four, but for a finals berth, at all.

Can West Coast upset the Carlton apple cart and send the Blues into finals oblivion? It makes for one of the more intriguing clashes in the last couple of rounds. Let’s have a closer look.
