R22 – GWS v Brisbane – The Big Statements

Who saw this coming?

Given the way the 2024 season has played out to date, maybe we all should have?

After starting the game in reverse, the Giants managed to claw their way back against a team that had won nine in a row, and were playing on their home deck. A lot of teams would have put the cue in the rack after Brisbane gave them a bit of a touch up in the first quarter, but there is a line amid the ‘Big Big Sound’ that states this side will never surrender.

And they lived and breathed that ethos in this game.

The Lions shot out of the blocks, and really, should have put the game away in the first quarter. GWS lacked run – they looked lethargic, and Brisbane appeared as though they could have put them to the sword.

They should have put them to the sword.

Returning 4.7 for the quarter, with a couple of shots sailing out on the full, as well, the Lions left too much on the table, and the Giants entered the second quarter feeling more than a bit peckish.

From there, GWS worked their way into the game. Three-straight to start the second quarter set the cat amongst the pigeons (which the MCG should look at to see if they can rid the place of seagulls. No bearing on this game, but far out I hate night games at the MCG – it’s bird shit city!) and when Finn Callaghan slotted a goal to bring the margin under a kick, it was game on.

The arm wrestle continued into the final quarter, with the Lions holding an eight-point lead. They kicked the first and looked set to put the game away.

But remember that ‘Never Surrender’ line?

The Giants finished with the last six of the game, with five coming from their talented young duo of Aaron Cadman and Darcy Jones, as they ran over the top of the home side, and moved into second-place on the ladder.

A heap to get through in this one – let’s jump into HB’s Big Statements.
