The Tease – Can You Ever Believe in the Saints?

The Saints are at it again.

In the twilight of the 2024 AFL season, they are looking across the room at their supporters, winking suggestively, and beckoning them to follow them one last time.

They know you well.

A suggestive look, a hint that they might actually give you what you so desperately want, and then you walk out with a hole in your pocket where your money used to be, and another year of membership at the club that promises so much, but delivers so little.

When Ross Lyon returned to Moorabbin after tours of duty at the Fremantle Football Club, as well as the media, some hailed him as the messiah. Others hailed him as a false prophet. Others still, and this is where you find me sitting, watched him carefully as he took a list to the finals in his first season. Ahead of time, perhaps.

Big things were expected from the Saints in 2024.

A wink.

A slight touch on the arm.

A chance!

And here we are again – St Kilda out of the running, but doing enough to suggest that they’re not too far off.

Do you have another crack at this flirtatious group in 2025? They’re giving you the indication they might finally be ready.

But they’ve done that to you before, haven’t they?
