It might be time for a few apologies in the world of AFL Football, and I count myself amongst those who should be readying their retractions.
We all get things wrong – some way more than others, but when you’re talking footy, you form your opinions and the news cycle tends to add to the way someone feels or thinks about a player. Some people use the news cycle as the basis for their opinions – a poor option – and I believe there would be quite a few who had a bit of help from the “experts” in forming their opinion of one of the more maligned players in the game at the moment.
I write about Rory Lobb, who has had the stuffing kicked out of him in the media, on socials, and even on this very site over the course of his career.
You see, disliking what Rory Lobb was doing was pretty easy. At 207 centimetres, Lobb was blessed with the type of frame that is a gift to athletes. Basketball and football both love a player of his size with the ability and the agility to continue to be in the contest when the ball hits the deck. With players running around, playing in the ruck who are shorter than him, and less athletic, it appeared as though Lobb was ready-made to make an impact on the game as one of the premier big men in the competition.
But things didn’t quite go that way, did they?
