R19 – Brisbane v Sydney – What Did We Learn?

It was a strange game at the Gabba, as a great start by Brisbane, and the standard slow start by the Swans gave way to an enthralling arm-wrestle and grandstand finish.

It was a contest that the Swans will lament – it was there to be won, and they had plenty of chances to do so through the third quarter, and it may be a game the Lions feel as though they pinched. Sydney squandered opportunities in the third that would have gone close to finishing the Lions off. To their credit, Brisbane were able to hang in the game despite a rare down-day from their dual Brownlow Medallist, Lachie Neale.

That down-day came courtesy of some attention from Luke Parker, and with Eric Hipwood monstered by Lewis Melican, it felt as though they were a couple of players down, themselves.

So, what did we learn from this game? What did the Lions prove, and what did it teach us about the Swans? We’re five games away from finals and these teams are now likely going to be in the top four… together.

Maybe this was a preview of what we’ll see come the last Saturday in September?
