R16 – Fremantle v Sydney – The Big Questions

Holy cow… are you a believer, yet?

The Fremantle Dockers have been humming along in 2024, but people have not really taken them seriously. The perception they’d not really beaten a contender, right or wrong, hung around their neck. Some said they’d not beaten a top eight side. Travelling to the SCG and facing the league’s best, this team needed to make a statement, and make the rest of the league sit up and take notice.

Do you think they’re now noticing? You don’t get a bigger scalp than the mob clear on top.

The Dockers gave the Swans fits in this game, nullifying their midfield, and smashing them at stoppages around the ground. With Sean Darcy controlling Brodie Grundy, and the Freo midfield putting the brakes on the “Holy Trinity” of Heeney, Warner, and Gulden, the Dockers were able to punish the Swans for errors. Jye become a deadeye again, Fyfe turned back the clock with an accountable performance, and Josh Draper, brought back in to replace the man many thought was irreplaceable, Alex Pearce, stood up when it mattered most.

So, so, so much to get through in this one. So many little individual moments that made this a memorable Freo victory. Let’s jump into The Mongrel’s Big Questions.
