R14 – GWS v Port Adelaide – The Big Questions

Well, this one felt like a real eight-point game, didn’t it? And not just because it felt like there were eight points kicked for every goal scored, either.

These teams seem to be in the position where they could end up facing each other in the first week of finals, given their form up to this part of the season. GWS started like a bullet, winning their first five games before hitting the wall. Port have been impressive in fits and starts, as well, but have yet to truly string together a series of games that separate them from the pack.

At ENGIE Stadium in Western Sydney, I was hoping we’d get to see the best of these teams. However, I am sorry to say, we didn’t. We didn’t even get close.

Inaccuracy plagued these sides all game, with the Giants unable to kick a major for the whole first quarter before slotting three in the second.

At one stage, the teams had kicked a combined nine goals and 23 behinds, and that is not taking into account the shots that didn’t make the distance, or went out on the full. Like Joe Ganino streaking through the neighbourhood after his bucks night, it did not make for the greatest spectacle

In the end, it was the Giants with a combination of better execution (kind of) and more accountability that won out to give them a badly-needed win. This victory leapfrogs them over Port on the ladder, and puts them back in the hunt for a top-four spot.

Plenty to get through in this one. Let’s jump right into the meat of it with The Mongrel’s Big Questions.
