R13 – Carlton v Essendon – The Big Questions

There are a few home-and-away games that have that big-game feel every season.

Anzac Day is one. The season-opener is another. Dreamtime, Easter Monday, and both the SA Showdowns and WA Derbies have that feeling about them. I love watching all of them.

It might be time to add this game to the list.

The MCG was pumping prior to the first bounce – a roiling wall of noise as expectations were high for both clubs. As the standalone Sunday Night Footy game, the eyes of the footy world focused on the MCG as the Blues and Bombers locked up in a clash that may well end up shaping the top four.

And we saw the Blues walk away with four points, displacing the Bombers in the top two in the process.

Carlton asked questions of the Bombers they simply could not answer, and several of them were asked in the contest, as they appeared more desperate and more capable of winning the footy in close. The Blues were aided by the efforts of their tagger, Alex Cincotta, whose stock rose again following his job on Zach Merrett. The Blues actually ended up deploying Lachie Cowan to put the brakes on Nic Martin, who got off the chain in the third quarter, as well.

Some teams refuse to play a negating player – the Blues had two going at once!

Plenty to get through in this one, including a couple of roasts for players who just did not show up for this one.

Let’s jump into The Mongrel’s Big Questions.
