We can sum this up pretty quickly, if you like. Of course, we’ll drill down to get into the nitty gritty, and focus on the good, bad, and ugly, but in a nutshell, it is a pretty simple game to wrap up – you had one side that made the most of their opportunities, and another team that squandered most of their own.
When you break the game down into the simplest terms, that’s how this one played out.
The Crows couldn’t miss early in the game, quickly building a lead behind big goals from Darcy Fogarty and Taylor Walker before Charlie Dixon pulled one back for Port. However, as the Crows kicked more goals the Power started spraying shots like me trying to use the toilet in the dark. It was as though the goals and behinds were reversed for each team as the scoring shots remained about even, but the margin widened.
I have to be honest with you, here – there were long periods of this contest where not a lot happened. I know that sounds silly, as this was intense contest, as all Showdowns are, but for extended periods, the footy was stuck between the two arcs, with neither side able to do much in the way of attacking in a meaningful manner. But it was the way the Crows were able to convert when the chance did arise that made a difference.
On the night when the Adelaide Football Club paid tribute to retiring champion, Rory Sloane, they had players young and old stand up. Jake Soligo, Darcy Fogarty, Josh Worrell… all played important roles, whilst for Port, it seemed to be a case of Zak Butters or bugger all else for the majority of the game.
Time to get into the review. Let’s go with the Mongrel’s Good, Bad, and Ugly.
