R2 – St Kilda v Collingwood – HB’s Loves and Hates

There is something brewing at Moorabbin. You could feel it coming into this game – if you watched the Saints in the pre-season, you would have seen it.

They’re hunting.

And this week, it was Magpie season at the MCG.

There are times when you observe a team and you can almost see them come together. This is how I feel about St Kilda in 2024. They came into this game against a wounded Collingwood, and it was as though they could smell a bit of blood in the water. The more they brought the pressure, the more you could see them starting to sense the kill.

The Collingwood Football Club ventured into this contest with the dreaded words hanging over their heads – premiership hangover. And with some very Un-Collingwood-Like efforts, probably cemented that opinion in the minds of many.

Some may look at the free kick count and point to it as the reason St Kilda won, but that is a cop out. The Magpies were second to the footy, forced into errors, and their overlap and second efforts were close to nonexistent.

And that all comes down to what St Kilda did and didn’t permit their opponents to do.

Marcus Windhager, Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera, and Rowan Marshall all starred, as Jack Higgins kicked an incredible late goal to give the Saints breathing room in the last quarter. Meanwhile, the reigning premiers saw some of their biggest names fail to show up.

Plenty to get through in this one, as we jump into HB’s Loves and Hates of St Kilda’s big win at the ‘G in Spud’s game..
