So, I am sitting in the lovely surroundings of Badger Creek at the moment, basking in the quiet of the farmland and hills behind us… great little place – Wiggley Bottom Farm. Not named after anyone I know… I swear, and not an advertisement – just a lovely place for families. I only endorse places i approve of, and this place is a beauty. Highly recommended for a getaway.

Anyway, this time of the day sees the kids occupied and Mrs Mongrel doing her own thing, so I can knuckle down and get some thoughts about the last few days online. And it has been an eventful couple of days, hasn’t it? ?

Without further ado, some of HB’s random thoughts.

 

Oh, what the hell? A Mongrel paywall? Yep, I believe my work is worth twenty cents per day. If you don’t, that’s fine. Don’t complain, though. Seems unlikely that Ben King would deliberately embarrass himself to get rid of a coach that he was a big fan of when he re-signed a year and a half ago (remember the reports that he wanted assurances that Dew would stay). The King brothers both seem nervous and bad at dealing with pressure (Max usually plays badly for a whole game when he makes mistakes early) – I’d say that’s a far likelier explanation for his terrible performance (still unfortunate for him, Dew, and the team).

      Good line about the AFL and the DHHS. I wish there were some body that could make an intervention, but if there was, it would probably be as corrupt/incompetent/motivated by “optics” as the AFL. I was just reading an article from the 5 June, 1880 edition of the Australasian (page 11) in which Peter Pindar (pseudonym of Robert Wallace, a very entertaining football writer) warned against professionalism (in 1880!) and said that “there can be little doubt that the accumulations of surplus resources will assist in developing various evils, chief among them a race of professional players who will reduce the game from its present high position as a fair, manly recreation to a mere bidding for gate money, with all its attendant curses of bookmaking, betting, and scheming.” I don’t object to players being paid at professional rates… but it can’t be denied that the administration has ended up worse than Peter Pindar could ever have imagined. Looking forward to whatever you write in the next 48 hours.

      You may want to know that the Defensive Player of the Year article is still visible to regular members (not that I might, but you might).

          Pretty hard to cook it up, too, considering I copy and paste the code. 😕😕😕

    2. Re: Dimma. In my experience it’s very difficult to move when you’re separated with kids. Does he really want to live on the gold coast with his kids in school in Melbourne. His ex-wife and kids can’t be expected to move up there unless of course they want to.

    3. I wonder if more exploration of the send off rule might be a good thing- you and the other writers offer your extended thoughts on why it might/ might not be a good thing. All sorts of things might come into such a discussion, such as tradition, the impact on the team who suffers a loss at the hands of someone who knows they can’t be removed from the game, the slippery slope argument, whatever. Would be good to see somewhere a consideration that isn’t just ‘this is what i reckon and that is the extent of the argument’ (note that while this might be read as criticism of what you’ve written, its really just a plea to extend it so that we might attend to it more fully, something that the Mongrel offers and why I love it!).

    4. Ben King is struggling in his return from injury. He was not voting with his performance, at the start of the season every expert said it would take home time to get back to his best, and he will, although the turmoil of last week made it hard for every player
      Caroline Wilson is a awful woman who should be sacked. She waged a vendetta against Dew, and he is not the first. Last year she wanted Clarkson at the Suns, that would have been great would it! If you grind away for long enough stuff sticks. She walks a very fine line in the day and age of looking out for people’s mental health.
      Only time will tell us our Board made the right decision
