As the Tigers looked to celebrate the 300th game of club legend, and triple premiership player, Trent Cotchin, St Kilda swiftly moved to rain on the parade, with the first four goals of the game threatening to blow the Tigers off the park.
Their pressure was tremendous, and their use of continuous movement had Richmond on the back foot to start the game. As the Saints played on and took the game on, the Tigers started to answer. First, it was a goal to Shai Bolton to open their account, then Jayden Short hammered one home from long range, and after a Max King mark and goal, it came time for the former captain to stand up and make a difference.
Pushing forward and marking, Trent Cotchin went back and slotted a long goal to inspire his team yet again, and his Richmond teammates came from everywhere to get around their former skipper. Another long bomb from Short and a goal from Ben Miller saw the Tigers kick six for the quarter to lead after giving the Saints a start.
As the second quarter commenced, the expected rain began falling. Over 63,000 supporters that braved the horrible Melbourne weather watched the game turn from a fast-paced, skilful exhibition to a classic wet weather slog.
And nobody slogs it out in the wet quite like the Tigers.
Here’s The Mongrel’s Big Questions from the win that puts the Tigers right back in the finals hunt.
Oh, what the hell? A Mongrel paywall? Yep, I believe my work is worth twenty cents per day. If you don’t, that’s fine. Don’t complain, though. Sometimes, I open these reviews up after 24 hours or so. Sometimes, I don’t. There is no favouritism… I just don’t.
