I shouldn’t get as much enjoyment out of this as I do.

Compiling weekly rankings that feed our Defensive Player of the Year Award sounds, on face value, like a tedious task, but as I rifle through numbers and votes, I have to admit… I do it with a smile on my dial.

This week saw one of the competition’s forgotten big men (for those with short memories) shoot to the top of the rankings, whilst an old head stood tall down back for the Eagles, a Magpie superstar proved his AA credentials and a young gun was one of few Bombers to stand up against the Power.

The aim of these rankings is to assess defenders, as well as in this week’s case, taggers, in a range of categories to provide the most balanced assessment of defenders as a whole. Each week, players hit statistical triggers and score points in spoils, intercepts, rebound 50s, metres gained and disposals combined with efficiency. Add in coaches votes and Mongrel votes and “viola”! You have the makings of a pretty tight little DPOY ranking.

This started in 2020 after a positive response to our Wingman Rankings, and has been added for our second-tier, Inner Circle Members.

So, without further ado, here are the results from Round Two and the overall leaderboard listed below.

This content is for our fantastic Inner Circle members. Please note – this is a second-tier membership and they also get access to the weekly Mongrel Player Rankings and X-Factor Rankings fortnightly… I’d better get onto that one, huh? Want to join them?
