I have very fond memories of the kind of football that allowed and yes, encouraged players to execute a bump. It was a weapon to be deployed to upset an opponent, to create room for a teammate and yes, to take them out of the play.

As we have seen the spectre of concussion loom over our sport, the emphasis on stamping out head high contact has become increasingly important. It happens so seldom these days that when it does, the player that inflicts the damage has the gaze of the football world focus in on him like the eye of Sauron.
