I don’t believe there are many AFL supporters in general who wanted to see Lance Franklin on the sidelines this season. Maybe some Essendon supporters, and even then, it’d only be until their round two clash against the Sydney Swans was over.

At the end of the 2016 season, Buddy reaching the lofty 1000-goal mark seemed a mere formality. He had a nine-year deal with the Sydney Swans in place, and six years to run on it. He needed just 223 goals to reach the magical mark. Coming off an 81-goal season, it seemed as though he’d have it with plenty of time to spare.

Fast forward to 2020, and now time seems to be running out.
