Ten Things I Learnt After Round One

1 – You can now add Brad Scott & John Worsfold to the endangered coaches list.

I guess we shouldn’t get too carried away. Both North and the Bombers were on the road and it is only just one game, but North entered this game as favourites, while some have suggested Essendon are a Top 4 contender this year. So, with that kind of expectation, another bad performance or two and the jungle drums will start to fill the air. Richo was only 2 points away from hearing them as well!

2 – Clearly the Dockers did not follow Ross Lyon’s gameplan when scoring 141 points.

I’m almost certain that the players ignored Ross Lyon’s instructions and played attacking football. I mean, surely Ross hasn’t finally realised his lockdown style won’t get him enough wins to play finals anymore? Perish the thought…

Meanwhile Cam McCarthy bags five goals which makes me think we’ve entered a parallel universe where everything is the opposite to what we’ve come to know.

3 – Every year there’s one foolish team that nominates themselves as a Top 4 prospect before the season starts and ends up with egg on their face.

This year it’s Essendon.

Oh boy, I knew this was going to come and bite them on the bum! They had a reasonably good year last year, but I didn’t see anything revolutionary during the trade period that made me think they would rise up the ladder much. Looks like their lacklustre JLT form might have a little more to it.

4 – Maybe, just maybe, the Swans will finally slide down the ladder.

We say it every year and they don’t… You write the Swans off at your peril, but boy they were flat. Chances are they’ll lose the first 5 or 6 games and then still find a way to make the finals. Although, this year, I doubt it.

It’s been a good run. It could be over. Or is it?

5 – Geelong are still a very good team.

Many had Geelong not making the 8. I’m not one of them. This was one of the few tips I got correct this week. There’s a few too many stars in that team for them not to play finals. You can put Tim Kelly in that group too, and I reckon they’ll move Perth to Corio to keep him on their list in 2020.

6 – I don’t think the Hawks will miss Tom Mitchell as much as we thought.

There’s probably only one guy who was secretly a little pleased when Tom broke his leg and he would be out for the year. His name is James Worpel. We saw glimpses of him last year, but his first opportunity on the big stage and he gets 27 disposals in a BOG performance. Problem solved straight away.

And if anyone thinks Clarko still doesn’t have it, the stats told an interesting story. The Hawks had lower stats in every category except for two; the scoreboard, and long kicks. I was paying attention, but were the other 17 coaches?

7 – I think Port Adelaide might have drafted some good kids in the last year or two.

Who the hell is this Butters kid from Bacchus Marsh of all places? I live there and even I’ve never heard of him. He bobs up for two goals when Port needed them, and young Duursma was good as well. We’ve had a few first gamers who had an impact, such as Sam Walsh & young Shultz from Fremantle.

I wouldn’t be engraving Sam’s name on the Rising Star trophy just yet.

8 – Carlton are better, but they will still fall short more often than they’d like to.

Everyone knows I’m a Carlton man. I can see improvement. I think most people can, but I think it’s obvious to one and all that winning games is a different story.

They keep asking supporters to be patient and allow the team to gel, but when they’ve turned over 53 players in just four years, is it really us supporters who are impatient?

9 – Are Brisbane that good, or are the Eagles suffering from a premiership hangover?

It looked like it was going to the script at quarter time. What many don’t realise is that the last three quarters yielded 14 goals to the Lions and just two to the Eagles. This was a comprehensive smashing and puts the prospects of back to back success in serious doubt.

I need to see another Brisbane performance before I jump on. Round 2 v North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium is all of a sudden very interesting. I’m also developing a small man-crush on Charlie Cameron. I love the Lions’ recruiting in the last 3 years.

10 – Anybody who tipped more than 4 winners this round knows nothing about football…
